About Flight Delay Predictor
The most comprehensive free source of flight delay analysis for US domestic flights
Who We Are
Flight Delay Predictor was created by a data scientist and travel enthusiast who was frustrated by the lack of accessible, granular flight delay information available to everyday travelers. What started as a personal project to make better travel decisions has evolved into the most comprehensive free flight delay analysis tool available today.
As both a frequent traveler and someone who works with data professionally, our founder recognized that while airlines and travel booking sites provide basic delay statistics, they rarely offer the level of detail needed to make truly informed decisions about flight timing, connections, and route selection.
Our Data
Our analysis is built on a foundation of over 60 million individual flight records provided by the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). This massive dataset spans nearly a decade of flight operations and includes detailed information about every commercial flight departure and arrival in the United States.
The BTS data includes:
- Scheduled and actual departure/arrival times
- Delay duration and categorization
- Route information (origin and destination airports)
- Airline and aircraft details
- Date and time information for seasonal and daily pattern analysis
What Makes Us Unique
Flight Delay Predictor is the only completely free source of highly granular flight delay data on US flights. While other services may charge hundreds or thousands of dollars for detailed aviation analytics, we believe this information should be accessible to everyone.
Unprecedented Granularity
Our tool estimates the probability of delays or missed connections using historical data with specificity that's simply not available elsewhere for free:
- Day-of-week analysis: Monday flights vs. Friday flights can have dramatically different delay patterns
- Monthly and seasonal trends: Winter weather impacts vs. summer thunderstorms vs. holiday travel surge
- Time-of-day patterns: Early morning vs. afternoon vs. late evening flight performance
- Airline-specific performance: How different carriers perform on the same routes
- Route-specific insights: Which city pairs are most problematic and why
Connection Probability Analysis
One of our most valuable features is connection probability estimation. By analyzing millions of flight arrivals, we can predict your chances of making a connecting flight based on your specific layover time, the airports involved, and historical delay patterns for your exact travel scenario.
Our Methodology
Important: Our tool does not use weather forecasts or real-time information to predict delays. Instead, we rely entirely on historical data patterns to provide statistical probabilities.
This approach has several advantages:
- Consistency: Our predictions are based on long-term trends rather than day-to-day variability
- Reliability: Historical patterns tend to repeat, especially for operational and systemic causes of delays
- Simplicity: You can plan your travel decisions based on statistical likelihood without needing to monitor weather forecasts or real-time flight status
While this means our tool won't predict delays caused by unexpected weather events or other real-time factors, it excels at identifying systematic patterns: which routes are consistently problematic, which airlines perform better on specific routes, and which times of day or year to avoid for critical travel.
Our Mission
We believe that travelers deserve access to the same quality of data that airlines and industry professionals use to make operational decisions. By democratizing access to comprehensive flight delay analytics, we help travelers:
- Make more informed decisions about flight timing and connections
- Understand the real reliability differences between airlines and routes
- Plan travel schedules that minimize the risk of delays affecting important events
- Choose connections with appropriate buffer time based on actual historical performance
Flight Delay Predictor will always remain free because we believe this information is too valuable to put behind a paywall. Travel is stressful enough without having to guess about delay probabilities.
